Spine width is the thickness of the text block; total book thickness includes covers. Use these for cover artwork spine width, binding choice, and shelf space.
Using single-sheet caliper for a different paper than the one in the job will skew the result. Not adding cover thickness gives an underestimate for case-bound or thick-cover books.
